CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

FRANKIE

When the black smoke faded, we were back in Everest’s room. Lord Braison flicked his wrist—Mei-Ling gasped and sat up. She clutched her throat with trembling hands. Her eyes widened and shot to me.

Lord Braison hurried to her side, then dropped to his knees beside her. “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. That was awful. I hated it. Are you okay? I had to attack you. It was the only way to avoid suspicion. I’m sorry—”

“—I love this kid.” Saber shook her head and laughed. “He pulls some of the most twisted, fucked up kill shots and then melts into a puddle because he had to bite her. “Don’t take this the wrong way, Braison . . .”

He sighed and closed his eyes. “That statement is always followed by something bad.”

I glanced over my shoulder to Everest. but he wasn’t smiling. In fact, he was seething. His nostrils flared and his fangs were poking into his lips. His chest rose and fell quickly. I recognized the warning signs. He was furious and ready to snap.

“But I’m glad Sweyn tried to kill you.” She pursed her bloodred lips and eyed him. “You’re quite the addition to our team.”

“Saber,” Everest growled.

She shrugged. “What? You and I are old as fuck. The fresh new blood not hardened by the cruelty of the world is just what we needed.”

Lord Braison chuckled. “I think the faces on these two girls right now suggests I’m far colder than the everyday civilian.”

Saber grinned. “I bet your kill count isn’t far off from mine and you’re only—What? Seventeen?”

“Seventeen forever.” Lord Braison looked to the ceiling. “Just like Edward Cullen.”

Saber took his chin between her fingers, her long red nails a sharp contrast to his pale skin. “That is the face of a killer.”

He laughed and hung his head.

Everest snapped a string of words that were so harsh they made me flinch, even though I had no idea what he’d said. Lord Braison stood and faced him while Saber responded. All humor gone. Their words were clipped and sharp. Then they moved closer to each other, and their voices dropped lower to a whisper. Lord Braison said some words in English, but all I got was strong, power, and too obvious.

Everest growled.

Lord Braison held his hands up. “Hide in plain sight. That’s what we would do.”

Everest pinched the bridge of his nose and nodded. “Prepare for tonight.”

Lord Braison nodded once, then slipped out the door.

“Come on, Mei-Ling,” Saber said in a rough voice, like whatever they’d just discussed had ruined her whole day. She took my best friend by the elbow and led her to the adjoining door. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”

They were through the door and closing it before I could even speak. It slammed shut with a bang. I spun on Everest, “What does biting her do to her? What did the black lines mean? What happens to her now?”

“She’s fine,” Everest growled. He stormed toward the closet.
